The History of Birkenstock Shoes

Nope, they weren't created in the 1970s. Not even in the 1900s. They were created back in the 1890s by a man named--yep, you guessed it--Birkenstock. Shoes had been the family business since 1774, but Konrad Birkenstock took a new spin on his ancestors' business by creating the curved-to-fit Birkenstock shoes sold today.

His idea came just in time to rival mass-produced factory footwear. Since his custom shoes couldn’t compete against the more inexpensive shoes available, he shifted his idea. Instead of selling shoes, he sold inserts for arch support.

In 1954, the grandson of Konrad became restless with the inserts; he wanted to market a whole comfortable shoe. His dream was for walking in the shoe to be like walking barefoot.

Birkenstock shoes have since branched out past sandals. They now offer clogs, sandals, and shoes in every color imaginable. They boast durability and comfort.

Where to Get Birkenstock Shoes

Wearing Your Birkenstocks

Give them time! Your Birkenstock shoes sculpt to your feet within the first few weeks of wear.

Use a static spray or rub a dryer sheet on your socks before putting them in your shoes. That'll keep them from twisting with wear.

Wear your Birkenstocks for a few hours at a time. If you've ever worn contact lenses, you've heard this before. Gradually work up to wearing them all day so your feet can get used to the lower heel. Believe it or not, your muscles and tendons have gotten used to being in a less-than-comfortable position. They think that IS comfort. Once you get used to wearing your Birkenstocks, though, they'll remember what true comfort is.

Realize exactly what they're doing for your feet! They're lightweight and shock absorbent. They offer the support of a best friend. They also help line your feet and ankles up for less fatigue and wear on your joints. Plus, they increase circulation. Sound like a miracle in a shoe? Thought so.
