About Camper Footwear

There are many different types of shoes and boots designed to meet the needs of campers. Before selecting footwear for a camping trip, it’s important to think about the terrain of the area you plan to visit. Factors that can impact the type of shoes you need to pack include: the temperature of the region you plan to visit, the terrain, expected precipitation, and the types of activities you plan to enjoy during your trip.

Hiking Boots

Most campers utilize hiking boots on a regular basis. There are many different types of hiking boots. Selecting properly fitting boots designed for the type of hiking that you participate in can make the difference between a comfortable, enjoyable hike and a miserable experience.

Types of Hiking Boots

  • Trail Boots – This type of camper footwear is perfect for those who enjoy outdoor hikes along the smooth terrain of developed trails. Trail boots are sometimes barely taller than regular walking shoes, and are rarely higher than the ankle bone. They are lightweight and flexible, and break in fairly easily. They are usually made from suede or nylon, and may also include leather.
  • Cross Hikers – When most people visualize a hiking boot, the image that comes to mind is a cross hiker. These boots will work well on developed trails and smooth terrain, but will also stand up to the rigors of less developed areas and some backwoods terrain. These boots fit above the ankle, and they are designed to provide increased ankle and instep support. Because they are built from more sturdy materials than lighter trail boots, they may take longer to break in.
  • Off-Trail Boots – Campers who enjoy true backwoods hiking over rough terrain can benefit from boots designed specifically for off-trail usage. This type of footwear is designed to provide maximum foot and ankle protection and support. The toe areas are usually reinforced, and the actual boots are usually waterproof. Because they are heavier than boots designed for hiking in more developed areas, it is important to thoroughly break them in and get accustomed to walking in them before setting off on a backpacking expedition.

Climbing Boots

Campers who plan to enjoy mountain climbing activities need to invest in specialized boots designed just for this purpose. Even though hiking and climbing boots appear similar at first glance, there are important structural differences between these two types of camper footwear.

  • Mountain Climbing Boots – Footwear designed for mountain climbing provides maximum support for the feet and ankles. These types of boots generally have attachments that allow hikers to attach crampons to them if needed for trekking up snowy inclines. They generally have extra insulation to provide protection against cold temperatures common in many mountainous areas.
  • Ice Climbing Boots – Those who plan to climb icy mountains need boots specifically designed to withstand frigid temperatures and the rigors of vertical climbing. These boots should reach above the ankles and fit your feet like gloves. They should also be crampon compatible, and include detachable gaiters for maximum traction on the ice.
  • Rock Climbing Camper Footwear – Rock climbing shoes do not reach the ankles, and so are referred to as shoes rather than boots. They are available in both lace-up styles and slipper styles that have Velcro enclosures. They are designed to be very flexible, yet still protect the soles of the feet from rocky terrain.

Shower Sandals

Many campers forget about taking shower sandals along on camping trips. If you have your own RV and plan to shower in your unit, this type of shoe probably isn’t necessary. However, if you will be using the showers in a public bathhouse in your campground, it is a good idea to have a pair of rubber flip flops or other types of sandals that you can wear when bathing. Wearing something on your feet in public showers can prevent the spread of foot fungus and other types of bacteria.

Choosing Camper Footwear

Once you know what type of footwear you need to enjoy your outdoor activities, the next step in selecting camper footwear is finding high quality shoes or boots that fit well and provide maximum comfort. It’s generally best to visit a retailer who specializes in outdoor gear to get properly fitted and to identify the brands and styles that best meet your needs.
