Wearing Over-the-Knee Boots

They are perhaps some of the most challenging shoes to pull off in the real world. Over-the-knee boots, though, have grown dramatically in popularity thanks to the way they stormed the runways in 2009. It was not long before celebrities all over the world were wearing them, sporting them with everything from rocker-worthy mini dresses to simple black leggings.

Of course, once a fashion trend hits Hollywood, it makes its way to the "real world" very quickly, and that's exactly what happened with the over-the-knee boot. Designers large and small had a great hand in the frenzy's growth, ensuring that there was a reasonably priced boot for all women, regardless of their budgets. Many people were simply unsure about the look, not confident that they would be able to pull it off with the same ease and confidence that supermodels did.

Some, though, took the plunge and rocked them for everything they were worth – and in some cases, those boots are worth, well, quite a bit. More than a few major labels got in on the action, such as Gucci and Giuseppe Zanotti.

Gucci Over-the-Knee Boots

For some, the very idea of splurging on a pair of Gucci over-the-knee boots seems almost preposterous. Not only might they prove difficult to actually pull off, but there's also that undoubtedly brow-raising price tag to consider. Not surprisingly, though, there are plenty of women who fell hard for Gucci's sexy, look-at-me boots. To the label's credit, there are several styles available, so even the woman who doesn't feel comfortable wearing teetering heels might find something that suits her fancy.

Gucci Division Over-the-Knee Boots: These blazing hot boots need absolutely no introduction. Made of stretchy, glossy patent black leather, they might best be described as extreme boots. They pull up, up, up – well over the knee, closer to mid-thigh range – and add instant sex appeal to any outfit.

The four-inch heel is certainly not for the timid or anyone who doesn't feel comfortable in a pair of basic stilettos. In addition to the heel, there's also a one-and-a-half-inch platform to contend with, which adds a little extra leverage. The leg circumference measures 16 inches, which may pose a conundrum for those who have trouble finding boots that fit well over their legs. The boots are lined with leather, too – perfect for those who expect nothing but the best from their $2950 boots. These are seasonal and may not be readily available, but contact your local Saks Fifth Avenue store, which may still have them in stock.

Gucci Flat Over-the-Knee Boots: On the other end of the spectrum are the label's flat over-the-knee boots. These are exclusive to the Gucci Web site, and retail for $2590 at regular price (and sold on sale for $1039). Like their high-heeled counterparts, these flat boots are made with the same stretchy, smooth black leather and feature an inside zip closure. They are completely flat, which, at the very least, makes them a comfortable choice for women who prefer not to risk a four-inch heel.

That said, they hit just as high on the leg as the Division boots. Interestingly, there's a great difference between the two styles that can be attributed instantly to the heel height (or lack thereof). The flat version boasts a downtown chic attitude, yet it also exudes an English equestrian vibe that makes it quite polished and even elegant. The heeled boots, on the other hand, boast pure sex appeal.

How to Wear Them

Over-the-knee boots are definitely risqué, but they can be worn in everyday life if paired with the right outfit. Avoid the temptation to emulate Julia Roberts' famed Pretty Woman character and, instead, go the other route. With your heeled boots, be sure to put a pair of dark, opaque tights on. Then slip into a loose dress or a long tunic that falls to at least mid-thigh level. They, along with the flat boots, will also look chic worn with a pair of leggings or ultra-skinny jeans. The key is to ensure that there is no bare leg visible, and that your top is long enough to cover your hips. Insert non-formatted text here Insert non-formatted text here
