Knee High Boots

Why We Love Knee High Boots

Knee high boots will complement just about anything you've got in your closet--khakis, trousers, casual suits, blue jeans, gauchos, skirts and dresses! You can take your pick of heel types and heights, materials, colors and more. Fall is an especially good time for boots. If you can imagine it, it--or something very similar--probably exists.

Knee High Boots

Hard Times with Fit

Most styles of knee high boots are meant to be snug around the calf. If you've got skinny calves, it can be an excruciating task to wander from store to store, never knowing if you'll find that perfect pair of sexy boots. The same goes for girls with thick calves. The search for the best boot that zips up and stays snug--but not tight--could seem impossible.

Pull-On Stretch Boots

These often fit snugly enough for even the thinnest calves since they're made small with the intent of stretching (they just may not stretch if you're extremely thin). Treat them like pantyhose when you attempt to put them on or they'll leave you late for work, and opting for pumps. Scrunch them down, insert your toes, push down your heel, and slide them back up your leg.

Zip-Up Boots

The zip-up boots are hit or miss. It may take you longest to find a pair that fits just like you want. If you're only wearing them under pants--or with your jeans tucked into the tops--you don't have to worry about gapping. If you have very muscular calves, however, you might have to shop around to find a pair that doesn't squeeze too tightly. Zip-up boots are, on average, easier to fit than their stretchy counterparts. They have the added benefit of being easy to put on and take off.

Styles that Work for Almost Anyone

Lace-up boots and cowboy styles are quite the crowd pleasers. With lace-up boots, you have control over how tight they go. That means you get to adjust the comfort level. Being in control is a wonderful feeling. Choose from military boots, gothic style boots or granny boots. Cowboy styles are, by nature, looser than other types of knee high boots. If there's a bit of extra space between your leg and the leather, it's not a big deal. If they fit snugly around your muscles, that's not a big deal either. They tend to be more of a "one size fits all" style than others. These are pull-on boots but offer plenty of room to slip them on and off with ease.

What Do They Do For Your Silhouette?

Thick calves look thinner in sleek styles and dark colors.

Thin calves gain bulk in cowboy boots, slouchy styles and prints.

Since the heel and toe have more to do with what your silhouette will look like than the actual height of the knee high boots, play around with styles to see what suits you--and your attire--best.

If you're looking to elongate your leg, a pair of pointed toe black stiletto boots should do the trick. However, if your calves are on the thick side, you may want to opt for a narrow wedge heel instead for more visual balance.

Just as girls with muscular calves should stray from the skinny heels, girls with thin calves should opt for thinner heels. That's not to say you have to run around in stilettos all day, but try not to go with too chunky of a boot unless it will be covered by pants.

Gothic Style Boots

Usually, the knee high boots we see in fashion magazines and on television these days are simple, sleek and worn with sexy blue jeans or pencil skirts. But what about the gothic boots? They fit the bill and they're quite popular among a portion of the youth.
