The History of Lacoste Shoes
Lacoste shoes are every bit as stylish as the rest of the fresh, sporty looks and fabulous perfumes they're famous for. And, they are becoming just as sought-after.
The Lacoste brand has close connections with tennis. It was company founder, René Lacoste, who won the Davis Cup for France for the first time in 1927. His name is still as well known in the world of tennis as it is in the world of fashion.
Rene, who was born in France in 1904, was nicknamed "the alligator" by the press. He made a bet with the Captain of the French Davis Cup Team over an alligator suitcase. The nickname stuck and was quickly turned into an alligator logo, which Lacoste had embroidered onto his blazer.
That logo is still around today. It can be found embroidered on items from the Lacoste clothing range as well as on selected pairs of Lacoste shoes. It is believed that Rene Lacoste's embroidered blazer was the first instance of a logo being worn on the exterior of an item of clothing. Until then, logos had only ever been sewn on labels, where they couldn't be seen. So when you wear your Lacoste shoes, complete with embroidered alligator, you're not simply following fashion--you're following in a tradition started all those years ago by Rene Lacoste himself.
Early items from the Lacoste line were heavily inspired by the tennis courts. Although the clothing has moved into the mainstream, it retains that sporty, casual feel.
Buying Lacoste Shoes
Like Lacoste clothing, Lacoste shoes veer towards the casual end of the scale. The company still concentrates mainly on tennis and athletic shoes, with the odd pair of casual loafers or deck shoes thrown into the mix.
These are no ordinary tennis shoes, though. In the years since the company started, Lacoste has developed into a leading fashion brand. Look out for colorful, retro-inspired sneakers, sleek, sporty styles and shoes which are, in general, just a little bit out of the ordinary.
Many of the shoes carry the famous alligator logo in some form or another, either embroidered onto the side of the shoe, or displayed more creatively, as on these fabulous canvas slip-ons.
If you're looking for something a little less athletic in appearance, Lacoste also has a popular range of men's thong sandals. For women, there are also classic Mary Jane sneakers, modern slides, and casual flats.
Where to Buy
Lacoste shoes come in at the upper end of the price scale. You can expect to pay around $100 or more for your shoes. That means you'll find the line in upmarket departments stores like Nordstrom, as well as in most athletic stores or online at stores such as Zappos.
What to Wear With Your New Shoes
Casual shoes call for casual clothes, so save your Lacostes for the beach, the barbeque, or anywhere else where casual attire is acceptable. These shoes were originally designed to be worn with tennis clothes, so try them with short, pleated skirts or shorts and t-shirts for a sophisticated, sporty look.
