What is Rockabilly?
Rockabilly became popular in the 1950s. It is a mix between rock 'n' roll, bluegrass and country style music that started in the south. Most recently rockabilly has grown in popularity and has even formed its own subculture. Those who follow rockabilly have their own unique style. The men often slick back their hair and roll up the pant legs of their jeans. Women strive for the '50s pinup look or create a look tailored to their own personal taste. Tattoos are popular among both men and women.
A variation of rockabilly is psychobilly. This genre of music is generally described as a mix between late-1970s punk rock and 1950s American rockabilly. The psychobilly style tends to be more punk and gothic looking.
Rockabilly Musicians
Elvis Presley was one of the earliest musicians who played rockabilly music. Ricky Nelson, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, The Everly Brothers, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and Gene Vincent are some of the other rockabilly artists most people have heard of. In the 1980s, rockabilly music became popular again with bands such as the Stray Cats. In the 1990s and 2000s, there were still many bands playing rockabilly music. Today they combine their own unique sound with classic sounds from the '50s. They use a mix of rock, blues, country and swing music.

Great post, Stu - thanks for your input. Speaking from a musical point of view, I take your point but also want to add that some people do see Berry as a part of the rockabilly scene, if not as the face of rockabilly (which I wouldn't agree with) then as someone who embodied a few of the characteristics that defined rockabilly - the vibe or spirit, if you will.
-- Contributed by: Tsharmajust a note to say that although chuck berry was one of the greatest rock n roll musicians,he was not rockabilly.Rockabilly culture was almost exclusively a white mans thing.i don't intend this as a racist type of comment, its just the way it was. also, the roots of Psychobilly had absolutely nothing to do with anything gothic. I know....i was there
