The Importance of Soccer Shoes

The average pair of soccer shoes will see a lot of action. Soccer players run for miles during a ninety-minute game. Their feet will also be coming into regular contact with a hard soccer ball. The shoes you wear for soccer then, are just as important as the ball you play with or the team you’re on.

The Different Types

football shoes

The type of soccer shoes you’ll need will depend on the type of game you play. Do you play indoor or outdoor soccer? Are you involved in competitive play, or do you just kick a ball around for fun? If you’re a member of a soccer club, there may be certain rules about the type of shoes you’re expected to wear. These rules can be strictly enforced, so your first step when buying new shoes for soccer should be to check your club’s guidelines.

You’ll also have to decide whether to purchase leather or synthetic soccer shoes. While leather shoes are the choice of professional players because they're more durable and offer a better fit, synthetic shoes are less expensive. The relatively low cost of synthetics make them better for young players who may outgrow their shoes fairly quickly.

Assuming you have free reign as to which type of shoes to buy, there are four basic types of soccer shoes to choose from:

Molded Cleats

“Cleats” are the studs on the bottom of soccer shoes which help give the player better grip when running and chasing the ball. Molded cleats are a part of the sole of the shoe--they can’t be removed. These are the shoes most often worn by junior teams and people new to soccer. They’re suitable for all types of play.

Removable Cleats

A step up from molded cleats and used by more professional players, removable cleats allow the studs to be screwed into the bottom of the shoe. The cleats themselves come in a variety of lengths, which can be changed according to the ground conditions or the players preference.

Turf Shoes

Worn on artificial surfaces, turf shoes have no studs on the soles. What they do have is a heavily patterned sole to assist with grip.

Indoor Shoes

As the name suggests, these shoes are intended for use on indoor arenas. In addition, they have a softer sole without studs, which helps maintain the surface of play.

Buying Your Shoes

As with any type of Athletic Shoes, it’s important not to be too impulsive when purchasing your soccer shoes. Instead, try to spend some time wearing them--and move around in them! Ideally, try to run a little in them; kick a ball if at all possible. Don’t simply purchase a pair of shoes in your regular size, as the soccer shoes may fit differently, and it’s important to ensure a proper fit.

If you’re choosing to buy leather shoes, remember that the leather will stretch with use, so buy a snug fit. Don’t, however, purchase shoes that are too tight to be comfortable, or you risk serious damage to the feet.

Buy your shoes online from Soccer Corner, Soccer Post, ShoeBuy.com, or offline from any athletic shoe retailer.
