How to convert mens shoe size to a womens shoe sz

Tori, thanks for your interesting question! Though the history of shoe sizing is known (it dates back to 1324 AD, during King Edward II's reign in England!), it's not clear whether the first sizes were meant for men or women first. Given the period, it's a possibility that men's shoes were given priority.

Modern sizing techniques, however, were recognized in 1880 by Edwin B. Simpson. His method defined each incremental shoe size as 1/3" and each half size as 1/6". Again, there's no mention of which gender got first priority, but it's fair to assume that both were given equal treatment - everyone had to wear shoes!

I'm trying to figure out if they created shoe sizes for men or women first...or if both at the same time...and then so why different numbers for men vs women? PLEASE e-mail me any info on that!
